Another person reacts.
Before long, a simple discussion can become an argument.

Listen before responding
One of the easiest ways to improve a conversation is also one of the hardest:
Actually read what the other person said.
Not what you expect them to say.
Not what you think they meant.
What they actually wrote.
Sometimes a disagreement disappears once you understand the original point.
